Undercut with a clean edge, cut at ONYX Cuts in Vienna

UNDERCUT VIENNA · ONYX CutsUndercut in Vienna — the cut that lives on its edge

The undercut is the opposite of the fade: where a fade dissolves the transition, an undercut turns it into a statement. The sides run at one length, considerably more is left on top, and a visible edge sits between them. That edge is what decides whether the cut looks sharp or merely uneven.

What makes a good undercut

The height of the edge and the way it runs around the head. It has to follow the head shape rather than a straight line — otherwise the back reads flat and the temple too high. We draw it with a straight razor rather than fraying it with clippers; that stays sharp about a week longer. On top it's texture that decides: cut too evenly, the hair falls like a helmet; thinned out, it moves.

Which hair it works on

Best on strong, straight to slightly wavy hair — that's where the length sits up top and the edge stays visible. On very fine hair the edge reads hard, because there isn't enough volume above it to answer; a crop is usually the better response there. On tight curls the edge disappears after a few days, so we work it flatter, to grow along with them.

How long it lasts

Three to four weeks, longer than a skin fade. The edge softens as it grows but it doesn't break — which makes the undercut the lower-maintenance of the two. If you want the line permanently sharp, come every two to three weeks for a tidy-up; that takes less time and costs less than a full cut.

Häufige Fragen

Was oft gefragt wird

What does an undercut cost in Vienna?

From €42 here — with consultation, wash, cut, line-ups, styling and a drink. Add the beard and it's €68.

Undercut or fade — which is better?

That isn't a question of quality but of expression. The undercut works with contrast and lasts longer, the fade with a soft gradient and reads more restrained. At the appointment we look at your head shape and hair growth and say which works out better on you.

How do I style an undercut at home?

Volume spray into the roots of towel-dried hair, blow dry, then a small amount of matte clay or texture paste for hold without shine. How much suits you we'll show at the chair — that's usually the difference between a hairstyle and a helmet.
