With a fade, quality is more readable than with almost any other cut: either you see an edge or you don't. The catch is that you never see it on the back of your own head — and that's where most of the work happens. So it pays to know beforehand what to look for.
What makes a good fade
Three things. First: no visible step, not even in raking light — a fade that shows stripes in sunlight isn't blended, it's stepped. Second: a line that follows the head shape rather than running horizontally around it. Third: a nape that runs out softly. Cut the nape hard and you save five minutes at the cost of it looking untidy as it grows.
Fades on curls and heavy growth
This is where shops separate. Curly hair shrinks as it dries, so it gets cut dry with the shrinkage factored in — cut it wet as you would straight hair and you end up too short. The transition also has to be worked flatter, because a hard edge disappears within days on curls. We say beforehand when a taper is the better answer than a skin fade.
How long it should hold
A low or mid fade looks good for two to three weeks, a skin fade ten to fourteen days. If you can see an edge after a week, you didn't get a fade — you got two lengths next to each other. That's the only reliable test, and it needs nothing but time.
