Which length suits whom
Guard 1 to 2 shows the head shape unfiltered — that works on an evenly round head and reveals every dent. Guard 3 to 4 is the forgiving version: enough hair to cover unevenness, short enough to need no styling. If you have scars, a low whorl or a pronounced ridge at the back, you'll do better with a 4 than a 1. That's visible in advance, if someone looks.

Because what makes the cut read as groomed happens at the edges: the line at the forehead, the transition at the temple, the neck. Without them a buzz cut is just short hair. With them it's a cut. We draw the lines with a straight razor and blend the neck so the edge doesn't look chopped off.
