Most people make the same mistake with a beard: they shorten it. But how a beard looks depends hardly at all on length and almost entirely on three lines — the cheek, the neck, and the transition into the hair. Get those right and even a short beard reads as groomed. Get them wrong and the most expensive oil won't help.
The cheek line
The most conspicuous of the three and the one that goes wrong most often. Set too high, the face reads narrow and the beard looks stuck on; too low and it reads unkempt. The right line runs roughly from the earlobe to the corner of the mouth and follows the natural growth instead of straightening it out. We draw it with a straight razor — a drawn edge runs out sharp and holds about a week longer than a milled one.
The neck line
The second classic: stop at the jaw and you've been given a double chin; go too low and the neck has no transition at all. The line belongs about two fingers above the Adam's apple, in a gentle arc from ear to ear. It's the line you can see worst on yourself, which makes it the one an appointment is most worth having for.
The transition into the hair
On most people, beard and hair differ in density and in length. A hard step at the temple looks like two separate jobs. We blend the transition so beard and cut read as one — which is why hair and beard together achieve more than two separate appointments.
What's left to do at home
Touching up the cheek line every few days — that works with a trimmer once the line sits correctly. Beard oil against dryness and itching, sparingly: one to three pumps is enough for a medium beard. And an honest word when a product does nothing; that's part of the consultation.
